STRENGTHENING MARITIME TIES: PM SHEHBAZ SHARIF SEEKS ENHANCED COOPERATION WITH IMO
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has reiterated the government of Pakistan's commitment to strengthen cooperation with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and said that the government should prioritize the Blue Economy as the main pillar of its economic development strategy.
However, with our efforts and the cooperation of international partners, the importance of Pakistan on the world's maritime map will increase further. According to a statement released by the press wing of the Prime Minister's Office, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco, met the Prime Minister. He reiterated the determination of the Government of Pakistan.
He highlighted Pakistan's desire to expand fisheries and maritime trade, explore marine resources, promote coastal tourism and boost shipbreaking industry. Shahbaz Sharif said that his government is prioritizing blue economy as the main pillar of the economic development strategy. He highlighted the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in attracting investment and introducing innovative technologies to advance the fishing and shipbreaking sector.
The Prime Minister hoped that through these efforts and with the cooperation of IMO and international partners, Pakistan's importance on the world's maritime map would increase. He renewed Pakistan's firm commitment to work with international partners and the IMO to contribute to global efforts to reduce marine emissions.
Secretary General IMO appreciated the Prime Minister's leadership and Pakistan's proactive role in leveraging its maritime resources for economic development and its role in the global maritime community. He acknowledged Pakistan's active participation in the international maritime community and assured IMO's continued support for furthering cooperation for sustainable development.
