Secretary Ministry of Maritime Affairs visits IMO
Federal Secretary, Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Mr. Ghufran Memon has attended International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), from 3rd to 7th July 2023. He was leading Pakistan’s delegation supported by Dr. Faisal Aziz Deputy High Commissioner London and Captain Muhammad Shafique Maritime Coordinator IMO.
In this session a new milestone in IMO history is achieved. The new 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships was adopted, with enhanced targets to tackle harmful emissions. Ghufran Memon has presented two interventions on IMO floor to safeguard national interest and common interest of developing nations, finally post negotiations of 4 days, the revised IMO GHG Strategy has taken shape which includes an enhanced common global ambition to reach net-zero GHG emissions from international shipping close to 2050, a commitment to ensure an uptake of alternative zero and near-zero GHG fuels by 2030, as well as indicative check-points for 2030 and 2040.
This gradual and phased approach will give a reasonable time to develop Pakistan’s net-zero GHG emissions Strategy and Road map and Policy for ports and shipping, and fulfill our national commitment to CoP environmental goals and UN sustainable development goals.
During MEPC multiple meetings were organized to highlight Pakistan. Meetings with Secretary General Kitack Lim and IMSO Director General Laurent Parenté and many other top officials or Directorate heads have reap positive results particularly with regard to accession of Hong Kong Convention on Ship Recycling and commitment of technical and capacity building support to Pakistan.
